John Singleton Copley (1738–1815), born in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American painter known for his detailed and realistic portraits of colonial Americans. His work captures the social and political milieu of pre-revolutionary America. Copley moved to England in 1774, where he continued to achieve success with historical and genre paintings.
